Enclomiphene Therapy
What is Enclomiphene?
Enclomiphene citrate, also known simply as enclomiphene, is a nonsteroidal selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It is structurally similar to clomiphene citrate but is the pure enantiomer (single stereoisomer) of clomiphene. Enclomiphene is primarily used to treat hypogonadism and low testosterone levels in men.
How does Enclomiphene work:
Enclomiphene works by acting on the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. It binds to estrogen receptors in these areas, blocking the negative feedback mechanism that estrogen usually exerts on the production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). This blockade leads to increased secretion of GnRH, which stimulates the pituitary gland to release more LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). The increased LH levels in turn stimulate the Leydig cells in the testes to produce more testosterone. Enclomiphene dosing begins at 6.25mg daily and may be increased up to 25mg daily depending on individual response to treatment.
-
Non-Steroidal Nature: Enclomiphene is non-steroidal, which may be preferable for individuals concerned about the potential side effects of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).
Oral Intake: Enclomiphene is taken orally, making it convenient and easy to administer compared to other forms of testosterone therapy that may require injections or transdermal patches. This can improve adherence to treatment regimens.
Boosts Testosterone Production: Enclomiphene effectively increases endogenous testosterone production in men with hypogonadism or low testosterone levels.
Preserves Fertility: Unlike exogenous testosterone therapy, which can suppress sperm production, enclomiphene preserves or enhances sperm production due to its selective action on the hypothalamus-pituitary-testes axis.
Improves Symptoms of Hypogonadism: It helps alleviate symptoms associated with low testosterone, such as fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, and mood disturbances.
Bone Health: Increasing testosterone levels can help improve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
-
Hot Flashes: A common side effect characterized by sudden feelings of warmth, often accompanied by sweating.
Headaches: Some men may experience headaches during treatment with enclomiphene.
Mood Changes: Mood swings or irritability can occur, though these are generally less common compared to exogenous testosterone therapies.
Visual Disturbances: Rarely, men may experience blurred vision or changes in color perception.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort: Mild symptoms such as nausea or abdominal discomfort can occur in some individuals.
Lowered IGF-1 Levels: Enclomiphene therapy may lead to decreased levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 is important for growth and metabolism, and lower levels may affect muscle growth and overall metabolic health in men.
