What is BMI?

Body mass index compares your weight with your height to place the result within a standard adult weight category. It is widely used as a screening tool because it is quick and consistent—not because it captures every part of health.

How to calculate BMI

BMI is calculated from height and weight. Use the metric formula for kilograms and meters or the U.S. formula for pounds and inches. This calculator uses either system and rounds your BMI score to one decimal place.

The Equations

Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
U.S.: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height² (in²)

With metric measurements, divide kilograms by meters squared. With U.S. measurements, divide pounds by inches squared and multiply by 703.

BMI calculation example

At 5 feet 10 inches and 185 pounds, the calculated BMI is 26.5, which falls within the standard overweight range.

The same standard adult formula and category cutoffs are used for men and women age 20 and older. Body composition, pregnancy, age, race or ethnicity, and individual health history may still affect how a result should be interpreted.

BMI is a fast screening estimate based on height and weight. It can be useful for identifying questions worth exploring, but it cannot directly measure body composition, metabolic health, fitness, or how weight is affecting an individual.

A BMI category is a population-based screening range—not a prediction or diagnosis. Its practical value is identifying the health history, symptoms, measurements, and laboratory markers that may deserve a closer look.

The same BMI can tell two different stories.For example, a muscular adult with stable weight and reassuring blood pressure and laboratory markers may need a different interpretation than someone with the same BMI plus increasing waist size, hypertension, elevated glucose, or sleep-apnea symptoms. That is why BMI starts the conversation—it does not end it.

What is BMI and how is it calculated?

What is considered a healthy BMI for adults?

The standard healthy-weight BMI range—sometimes called the normal BMI range—is 18.5–24.9 for adults age 20 and older. It is a population-based reference range—not a personalized goal or guarantee of health.

Why does BMI matter?

BMI offers a quick, consistent way to screen weight relative to height. A result outside the reference range may prompt a closer look at waist measurement, blood pressure, laboratory markers, symptoms, habits, and health history.

Is BMI the same as body-fat percentage?

No. BMI does not directly measure body fat or distinguish how much weight comes from muscle, bone, water, or fat. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body composition.

Can BMI be misleading for muscular or athletic people?

Yes. Because BMI counts all weight the same, greater muscle mass can produce a higher result even when body fat is relatively low. Body composition and other health markers provide important context.

Is BMI different for men and women or by age?

For adults age 20 and older, the same standard BMI formula and category cutoffs are generally used for men and women. BMI does not adjust for sex, age, race or ethnicity, pregnancy, or muscle mass, so interpretation may differ. Children and teens need age- and sex-specific growth charts.

Does a high BMI mean I need weight-loss medication?

Not by itself. BMI may be one part of an evaluation, but treatment eligibility and safety depend on health history, current conditions, medications, relevant laboratory information, goals, and a clinician’s assessment.

Who should not rely on this adult BMI calculator?

This calculator is intended for adults age 20 and older. Children and teens use age- and sex-specific growth charts. Pregnancy, high muscularity, older age, and certain medical conditions may also make an adult BMI result less representative.

What does BMI not tell me about my health?

BMI does not measure fat distribution, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, fitness, strength, sleep, nutrition, symptoms, or personal and family history. It should be interpreted with other relevant information.

How often should I calculate my BMI?

There is usually little value in checking it daily. If you are tracking longer-term change, measure under reasonably consistent conditions and focus on the trend rather than small day-to-day fluctuations.
